Lost in the Shade

Opinion: Slavoj Zizek and Harum Scarum

Isn’t what Zizek means by  ‘capitalism with Asian values’ is capitalism within an authoritarian state, be it with varying degrees of democracy or otherwise? I get the feeling Mr Dabashi slightly misses the point here but maybe it’s me not understanding him..?

New, yet familiar, Australian Satire

thenonviolentcommunist:

This is an article arguing that the general response to Gaddafi’s death suggests that few people are stupid enough to truly oppose capital punishment when the rubber hits the road.

Quote: ‘I doubt even many progressives were outraged. Heard one complaint? And doesn’t this suggest that perhaps our opposition to capital punishment isn’t as firm as is often presumed?’

The article disgusts me, but this point is accurate. Very few of us are against capital punishment in any meaningful way.

Nice find with the Bolt article. I looked today for a Murdoch take on Nato’s proxy barbarism, but didn’t expect it to come from Bolt himself. The guy has finally become his own satirist; he can now truly be mistaken for taking the piss out of his own brand of fascism. Surely he can’t laugh off his own inability to distinguish between capital punishment, show trial and lawless brutality?

Don’t grant Bolt this one either- many millions of people see the Gaddafi show murder for what it is. And while conservative Australia laps up US political assassinations, others continue to press for some sanity. It’s the likes of Bolt and Murdoch that contribute to making this more difficult than it needs to be.
